Corrections policy

The short version

  • An error is reported by email to corrections@cfdc.org.uk with a note of what is wrong.
  • A reply comes within 5 working days, and the matter is settled within 21 days.
  • A confirmed error is corrected as soon as it has been checked.
  • A corrected piece carries a note saying what changed and when.
  • Typos and broken links are fixed without a note.

Reporting an error

Reporting an error is done by email to corrections@cfdc.org.uk. It helps to name the piece, quote the part that looks wrong and say what the correct version should be. Pointing to a source speeds things up.

A person need not be the subject of a piece to raise an error, and need not give a reason for asking. A company that has been written about should say so, because it tells the site who to reply to.

What happens next

A reply comes within 5 working days to acknowledge receipt and say what is being done. The matter is settled within 21 days.

The claim is checked against the source it came from. Where the site got it wrong, the piece is corrected as soon as checking is finished. Where the piece is judged right, a reply explains why.

How a correction is marked

A corrected piece carries a note at the foot saying what was changed and the date it was changed. The note stays for as long as the piece is published.

What is fixed without a note

Spelling, punctuation, formatting and broken links are fixed without a note, because nothing a reader relied on has changed. Anything that changes a fact, a figure, a date, a name or what someone was said to have done gets a note.
